Apprentices

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships have always been the perfect way to gain credible qualifications while working; they provide a genuine alternative for those who do not wish to study in a formal educational environment, and for those who want to get out into the world of work.  In short here’s what they look like:

The Four Components of an Apprenticeship

Working

An important part of the Apprenticeship is your job role and work place. This is the tasks you will be expected to carry out and the environment you will spend lots of time in! Typically, you’ll be expected to work a 37.5 hour week, which is 5 days a week.
The Apprenticeship will last for about a year (9-12 months). There are now also a variety of Advanced Level Apprenticeships on offer for those completing their first year and wanting to develop further and gain a higher level qualification. Many of LAC’s current Apprentices go onto the next level on completion of their first.

Training

The training component of your Apprenticeship is made up of the following 4 parts;
• NVQ - Assessment of your ability to work
• Technical Certificate
• Functional Skills - Numeracy and Literacy
• Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

Learning

In addition to formal training, you will also receive support and guidance from your manager/supervisor.
Your manager will set you appropriate tasks and continue to train you to ensure you know what you are doing on a day-to-day basis. They are also there for you to express any particular interests to, so if there is something going on at work that goes beyond your day to day tasks that you would like to be involved with, within reason, your Manager will be able to ensure this experience is gained. This is also something that can be discussed with your Apprentice Coordinator who will support you throughout your Apprenticeship.

Earning

Last but by far least! The minimum Apprenticeship wage as of 1st October 2011 is £2.60 per hour. However most Apprenticeships will pay more depending on which company you are placed with.
As a LAC Apprentice you will be paid fortnightly straight into your bank account.
