How are apprentices supervised?

The LAC, the Training Provider and the Employer are all involved in the supervision of the apprentice. A six week and a three month probation will be organised with all parties involved as part of the apprentice's Individual Learning Plan. Here is some additional guidance as to the nature of supervision:

Employer supervision – Usually their supervisor or manager
The employer will be asked to carry out normal inductions, appraisals and offer any necessary training, as with any new member of staff.

To optimise the productivity of your apprentice and help them fulfil their potential, it is also recommended that you provide some or all of the following:

  • Interesting and new experiences, such as secondment.
Exposure to new work situations and tasks, other than those integral to their role, can equip the apprentice with valuable skills and enhance productivity in their original role.
  • Involvement in assessment and monitoring.
This could be as simple as noting down examples when the apprentice has accomplished something new, or meeting with the assessor every so often to describe situations that fit to unit criteria.
  • Social inclusion.
Inviting the apprentice to social events, like the odd lunch or drink after work, or introducing them to members of staff that you think they would get on with, will give them a sense of belonging and help to encourage loyalty and commitment.

The LAC supervision – Unique to LAC, each London Apprentice comes with a mentor
The LAC will be involved in the 6 week and 3 month review and the LAC mentor is also available on the phone or over email should the apprentice need additional support or simply have a query.

Training Provider Supervision – Qualified Assessors:
The assessor will visit the place of employment every 5-6 weeks. During this time she/he will spend approximately one hour identifying and collecting evidence for the apprentice’s portfolio. Some of this time will also be spent observing the apprentice in the workplace. If the learner does require extra visits this can be arranged.
